Intern responsibilities vary by area; tasks may include conducting research, delivering administrative and organizational work, undertaking field activities and others. The intern can choose to work in the following areas:

1-A Member of Parliament’s office

 

The Member of Parliament (MP) exercises powers in the framework of the Parliament’s institution, and exercises other powers individually or in partnership with other MPs where he/she takes the legislative initiative. Two of these powers are legislative and oversight powers. Accordingly, interns can assist in some of the tasks related to these powers, including the following: 

·         Conducting research and analysis related to Parliamentary and Legislative work

·         Tracking laws published in the official Gazette

·         Reviewing and incorporating necessary amendments on laws and project laws

·         Preparing a file of laws under review, upon the request of the MP

·         Providing information on topics being voted on in public sessions

 

2- The General Secretariat

 

The General Secretariat of the Lebanese Parliament handles all administrative, financial and technical work to ensure a smooth workflow within the Parliament and the Presidency’s headquarters. The General Secretariat is headed by a first grade civil servant that handles a number of tasks including supervising all administrative units that fall under the General Secretariat, coordinating with each General Directorate in the Parliament, holding regular meetings for the general directors and heads of units, participating in the meetings of the Parliamentary bureau board, proposing its work agenda and acting as its secretary.

 

The General Secretariat of the Parliament is composed of a number of General Directorates and departments. Mentioned below are some of the areas where internships are available:

 

 The General Directorate of Sessions and Parliamentary Committees

 

This Directorate handles all matters related to the legislative process within the Parliament, especially matters of the General Assembly and parliamentary committee sessions. It also follows up with all stages in which project and proposal laws go through, starting from the joint administrative departments, where they are received, until their adoption in Parliamentary Committees and the General Assembly.

The General Directorate of Foreign Affairs

 

This Directorate handles the Parliament’s Arab and International relations and more specifically Parliamentary Friendship committees, bilateral cooperation and multiple party programs, and Arab and International Parliamentary Unions adhered to by Lebanon. Additionally, it supervises on the organization of international and Arab parliamentary conferences in Lebanon and the reception of Arab and foreign delegations visiting the Lebanese Parliament. This Directorate also insures necessary transactions and travel procedures for MPs and MP delegations assigned to travel to international conferences.

 

 

The General Directorate of Studies and Information

 

This Directorate handles the preparation of studies and research and provision of statistics in different fields to serve the legislative and oversight process of the Parliament. It also administers matters of the Parliamentary library and supervises the publishing of regular reports. Finally, it organizes local seminars held at the Parliament in cooperation with relevant General Directorates.

 

The Department of Information Technology

 

This Department administers the information technology network available at the Parliament, links the employees to the network, protects the secrecy of information and users’ rights, prepares necessary studies to develop the mechanization of the Parliament’s administrative and legislative work and legal documentation. Additionally, the department links the Parliament to an international and national communications network for the sharing and investment of information. It also administers the Lebanese Parliament website and insures that necessary programs are installed for the exchange of information with government administrations. Finally, it coordinates the organization of training sessions for employees with the General Directorate of Administrative and Financial Affairs.

 

 

3-Parliamentary Committees (outside sessions)

 

The intern can work with parliamentary committees through the head of the committee to prepare studies and conduct legal research, assisting committees in taking appropriate decisions when reviewing project or proposal laws. The intern however cannot attend parliamentary committee sessions because they are secret. Parliamentary Committees are:

 

1-Budget and Finance Committee, 2-Justice and Administration Committee, 3- Immigrants and Foreign Affairs Committee, 4- Public Works, Transportation, Energy and Water Committee, 5- National Education and Higher Education Committee, 6- Public Health, Labor and Social Affairs Committee, 7- National Defense, Interior and Municipalities Committee, 8- Displaced Affairs Committee, 9- Agriculture and Tourism Committee, 10-National Economy , Trade, Industry and Planning Committee, 11- Media and Communications Committee 12- Youth and Sports Committee, 13- Human Rights Committee, 14- Woman and Child Committee, 15- Information Technology Committee, 16-Environement Committee.
